Treat talent as the most valuable resource

As leaders we must remember that we only borrow our talented people for a period of time.

Obviously we want to make that time as long as possible but we have to accept that staff move on. What we must do is create an environment that allows talent to thrive and to grow. This way we can borrow them for longer.

One of the things I enjoyed most about my job was finding great talent and helping it grow.

If you have a business like mine, that revolves around its people, this talent development is the future of the business.

So, when I see great talent leave, I have mixed emotions. Obviously, I hate to lose great people, but on the other hand I am proud to have played a small part in helping them grow and develop into the people that they now are.

Although it does not appear on Maslow’s Hierarchy of human need, I believe respect is one of the most basic needs of a talented team member. People needs to be respected for who they are and what they do. Respect should be multi directional. As MD I respect the work that our facilities team do, particularly during the extremely challenging time of COVID-19. An account Exec should respect the way our Head of Client Business runs a pitch team. A designer must strive to recruit and grow the best talent. r should respect the work of a fellow artist.

Respect is not asked for, nor sort, it is earned and willingly given.
